Pros and Cons of the New Arbitration Law in UAE
In May 2018, the United Arab Emirates issued a long-awaited Federal Law on Arbitration (Law No.6/2018). This Law provides the legal framework for resolving disputes through arbitration in the UAE (outside the Free Economic Zones), or outside the UAE if disputing parties agree to apply the Law. Aside from bringing the Law on Arbitration to an international standard, the New Law also seeks to enhance the position of the UAE as a juridisction to host arbitrations in the increasingly comptetitive drive by many countries to attract arbitration related businesses. The British University in Dubai is organising a half-day workshop on the New law. The Workshop aims to indentify and assess the pros and cons of this new Law from academic and practical point of views including its potential effects on institutional and ad-hoc arbitrations in the State.
